ASET and QAA Codes of Practice for Work-Based and Placement Learning
ASET Offices, Burton Street, Sheffield Tuesday 28th February (10am - 4pm) £155 (ASET members)/£180(non-members)
The revised Section 9 of the QAA Code of Practice: Work-Based and Placement Learning was published in October 2007. Dr Anett Löscher, Development Officer, Research, Development and Partnerships Group, The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, will talk about the latest ongoing changes to this part of the QAA Code, which is aimed at policymakers in HEIs who are involved in drawing up strategies and procedures regarding their institution's placement and other work-based learning opportunities management systems.
The ASET Code of Practice was updated and revised in 2009, partly to keep both Codes fully complementary. This 2nd edition, entitled 'A Good Practice Guide for Placement and Other Work-Based Learning Opportunities in Higher Education', was launched in March 2009. The ASET Code is an operational handbook offering good-practice guidance to placement practitioners, students and employers. Its author, Dr John Wilson, ASET Chairman, will deliver this part of the session.
Both second editions of the Codes have moved away from dealing only with sandwich placements, to cover more flexible forms of work-based learning.
Last day for booking: Tuesday 21st February
An Introduction to Work Placement Management
London South Bank University Tuesday 13th March (10am - 4pm) £155 (ASET members)/£180(non-members)
This session will provide guidance for the management and support of work placements. Participants will be furnished with a basis from which they can develop their own plans and manage the day-to-day problems likely to be faced in their jobs. This is aimed at work placement managers, officers, administrators and academic placement tutors, particularly those with little experience who are new to their role, about to be appointed, or wanting a refresher course. This session is designed to introduce all the fundamental aspects of working in the field. The workshop is intended to be flexible and responsive to participants’ needs and interests and therefore emphasis may vary between topics.
Last day for booking : Tuesday 6th March
Engaging with SMEs for Placement Opportunities
University of Leicester Thursday 19th April (10am - 4pm) £155 (ASET members)/£180(non-members)
Engaging with SMEs can be an effective way of generating new and more varied placement opportunities for students. However, considering that many SMEs do not have formal summer or year-long internship/placement recruitment processes, or may not have considered taking on a student/graduate before, there can be barriers that make engagement difficult.
This training workshop aims to show:
- the sources and means by which to locate suitable SMEs
- the methods for engaging with SMEs (marketing the benefits of taking on students/graduates)
- the service level agreements or contracts to have in place
- how to make life easier for SMEs: things to do before, during and after the internships

Evidencing Impact and Reflecting on Practice – the uses of research
RESEARCH SEMINAR
London South Bank University Friday 27th April (10am - 4pm) £155 (ASET members)/£180(non-members)
When resources are being reduced, it is particularly important to understand the positive impact of our activities with students, and to continue to demonstrate the value of these activities to all stakeholders – the university, employers, prospective students, parents and of course current students. You may not intend to carry out formal research yourself, but all of us need to be able to explain our practice, even to ourselves, and sometimes we have to justify it.
After a presentation of the uses and types of research, colleagues will be asked to work in teams on choosing and preparing a pilot project proposal in one of these areas. There will follow a review of the relevant journals, and an explanation of literature access using Athens; delegates will then research topics of their choice. The closing session will consist of a review of two or three areas of interest to all placement professionals, based on journal articles.
[It is expected that colleagues would be able to access Athens via their own universities’ web-site]
Key aims of the event
- De-mystify research and statistics in particular
- Encourage the comparison of practice by colleagues in different institutions
- Review some of the most stimulating recent articles for people who might not have time to survey the literature
This event is for Placement professionals at all levels, especially those who do not have any research training
Last day for booking: Monday 16th April

Bespoke Sessions
ASET is always open to discussions on running bespoke sessions at institutions. We try and make these as easy to host as possible by offering to split invoices across faculties, allow institutions to invite and charge delegates from partner colleges etc. Prices start from £700 for a full day with unlimited delegates (subject only to the size of the room you can provide). We are a non-profit making organisation so the rates only subsequently increase by virtue of any third party consultants we deem appropriate to bring in.
We can run sessions on one topic or can mix and match different parts to cover multiple areas.
Some of the core topics we can offer include:
- An Introduction to Work Placement Management
- ASET and QAA Codes of Practice for Work-Based and Placement Learning
- Marketing for Placements
- Equal Opportunities for Work Placements
- Health and Safety for Work Placements
- IT Systems to Manage Placements
- Working with International Students
- International Placements
- Assessment and Accreditation of Placement Learning
- Disability, the DDA and Work Placements
- Foundation Degrees and Work-Based Learning

Qualification
In association with AGCAS, NCWE and NASES a professional qualification programme in the Management of Student Work Experience was launched in March 2008 at University of Reading. This suite of qualifications have recently transferred to the University of Warwick who offer a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters in the Management of Student Work Experience.
Entry is open to all those who are in placement centres, job shops, student volunteering or similar services; whilst the qualification is taught at postgraduate level and successful completion will lead to the award of a Postgraduate certificate or diploma applications are welcomed from those without a first degree, although experience and a keen interest in this field are essential.
The programme is delivered through a mixture of distance learning through an online virtual learning environment and some three day residential courses, giving students an opportunity to mix with others in similar roles and positions while they learn.
This is an important and growing sector and this qualification offers those involved an exciting opportunity to further their own professional development.
