Students of STEM disciplines may demonstrate strong technical proficiency yet could lack the soft skills foundation required to communicate effectively, collaborate across disciplines, with colleagues and to progress into leadership roles.  An actuary curriculum has traditionally been exam focused with less opportunity to cultivate essential communication competencies. As a result, students may graduate with expertise but limited experience in presenting complex ideas to non-technical audiences. This could also affect student success in interviews.

Presenting an actuarial case study from LSE, this Insight will show how students are being introduced to storytelling through data, to frame data within meaningful narratives and convey technical information in accessible ways to engage diverse audiences.  This Insight will consider how future finance professionals can be supported and how this can approach can be developed for other technical disciplines.
